Welcome to what may well be the last Dreamers Newsletter. Weather permitting we will be away next week and after that we really must concentrate on our house move.
I hope everyone had a good time last Sunday with the Red River Singers and “Shout”. That’s the last guest night until September 13th when the Club welcomes back Bruce (and Jill) Watson from Melbourne, a great success when they visited before and sure to offer a great show with their songs and humour. I’m sure many of us remember “I’m on the Train”. After that, it’s time for Bodmin Folk Club to visit on 27th September and then, on 4th October, old favourites in Pat Turner and Lynn Heraud.
Meanwhile we have a series of singers nights, opportunities for Dreamers to perform which many people seem to enjoy almost as much as guest nights. And, of course, the return of the raffle!
A final opportunity to plug our friends from Bodmin F/C who meet every Friday evening at 8.00 at St Petroc’s Parish Centre in Bodmin. Tomorrow, July 3rd, their guest is Tori Lang, a lovely singer who we have often enjoyed at Dreamers. The Bodmin web-site, with all the details of their programme, is Bodmin Folk Club – The home of traditional folk song in Cornwall. Est. 1968. Meanwhile Penzance Folk Club meets no alternative Wednesdays (15th and 29th in July), usually at the Bath Inn – but check for 15th July as they have had to go elsewhere when there’s a clash with the football. Their website is Penzance Folk Club
We didn’t know how many would come to the Cornish Zoom Folk Club last Saturday but, in the event, we had plenty of performers and audience in spite of the hot weather and competing attractions. It was good to see John and Marion again. The next session is on 25th July
The excellent Folk on Foot online site has Folk Album of the Year nominee Joshua Burnside on a walk near his home in East Belfast, singing songs from his latest album “It’s Not Going To Be OK” along the way. He talks about growing up in a divided city and ends up admiring the dramatic statues of characters from Narnia in C.S. Lewis Square and walking down the Bloomfield Road, as he sings his song “Ghost of the Bloomfield Road” – which captures his reaction to becoming a Dad. Joshua Burnside in East Belfast
The other online site which I’ve often mentioned is Live to your Living Room (Buy tickets – Live to your Living Room) which is basically taking its usual summer holiday until September except that it has a series of concerts streamed from Warwick Folk Festival over the weekend of 24th/26th July featuring some well known performers as well as less familiar names.
The latest paper version of Folk Life UK’s Folk Traditions Journal arrived this week with, as always, lots of interesting and well=researched stuff about folklife including an article by Lamorna Spry about “Camborne Hill” with lots of old photos, another by Jim Mageean about press gangs on the Tyne and plenty more.. I’ll bring it along to the Club on Sunday but its also online at https://www.folklife.uk/ftj-this-issue
That’s enough for this week. I hope you have found the Newsletter useful and enjoyable. Hope to see you at the Club on Sunday
All the best
Nigel
