Welcome to this week’s Dreamers Newsletter.
It was another busy night at the Club on Sunday with several visitors and some good songs and performances. More singers nights in the next few weeks before our next guests, The Anna Anise Trio on 14th June.
That will, of course, be at the end of the Shanty Festival in Falmouth whoch runs from 12th to 14th June. All the details of the programme and performers can be found at Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival. Let’s hope for a weekend of sunshine!
It is, of course, now Festival season. In late July/early August, we have the Sidmouth International Festival with the usual cast of thousands. Then, at the end of August, there’s the Cornwall Folk Festival at Wadebridge. Even if you can’t make the whole weekend, the Friday night alone offers a range of attractions. Friday night seems to be particularly for local performers. At the Goods Shed, there’s Rob Barratt, well known to us from his mix of comic poetry, satire, songs and surreal word-play. That’s in the afternoon and Rob is followed by a choice in the evening.
At the Town Hall, there’s a concert with Martha Woods, St Fian and Wake the River. At the Betjeman Centre there’s a double bill with Gavin Fairhall Level and Kings Heathens. Much more detail about all of these as well as tickets (event, weekend etc) at the Festival web-site https://cornwallfolkfestival.com/
As mentioned before, there’s another opportunity to hear Rob Barratt at the Lanner Community Centre on Saturday 6th June at the early hour of 6.30. Tickets from Lanner Parish Council – Together Improving your Community and other links about the Hall which may be useful at lannervh@outlook.com and https://www.facebook.com/lannervillagehall/?locale=en_GB
With all the other activity, the summer always tends to be quieter for online events but this coming Saturday, May 23rd, is the day for the Cornish Zoom Folk Club, as always at 7.30 on the 4th Saturday of the month. If you haven’t been for a while and fancy hearing some different musicians from your own living room, do come along, all welcome, audience as well as performers.
A new episode from Folk on Foot from Sherwood Forest on the trail of Robin Hood in the company of Guy Hayward, founder of the British Pilgrimage Trust and former Cambridge choral scholar. As we head to the Major Oak and beyond, Guy shares many theories about the Robin Hood legends, sings ballads about his adventures and extols the joys of pilgrimage. He even dives into a river in search of Robin Hood’s cave. Here’s the link A Robin Hood Pilgrimage with Guy Hayward
And, finally, more sad news. Sally Soulsby, Dave Hearn’s partner and a regular at Dreamers back in the Wheal Dream days, passed away last Thursday.
.
That’s all for this week. We’ll miss the Club on Sunday as we have visitors but hope it all goes well.
All the best
Nigel
