Welcome to this week’s Dreamers Newsletter, quite a few things to write about this week after missing out last week.
I think we all enjoyed Scolds Bridle from Lancashire last Sunday, plenty of great songs and plenty to join in with which always works well at Dreamers, so thanks to Sue and Liz for making the long journey to Four Lanes (at last, many years after Jonathan first tried to book them!). Hope the journey home went smoothly. Thanks also particularly to Sue and Michael for putting them up. It was good to see Roger and Kay back from their long holiday in Japan so we can look forward to hearing them both again soon.
This Sunday, 26th January, we have the visit of Penzance Folk Club. It’ll be great to see and hear them – it’s been a long time so a good opportunity to keep the close friendship going. This will be a free entry night, with a raffle of course. We are not providing a full buffet but if anyone would like to bring a little something, that would be appreciated. Jill will make some vegan flapjacks and Jane will make a cake.
There’s plenty on next weekend of course with the celebration of Roger Bryant’s life at the Membly Hall Hotel in Falmouth from 1.00 till 5.00 on the Saturday 25th. There’ll be food and lots of music with sessions for Bodmin Folk Club and Dreamers and, of course, many friends of Roger and Gaye including past visitors to the Falmouth Voice Tour. Pip Franklin’s attempting to organise the afternoon and I’m sure everyone appreciates that he’ll have a lot to fit in so, if you’ve been asked to perform, it would be helpful to avoid long songs and introductions.
That same evening, Saturday 25th, we have the April session of the Cornish Zoom Folk Club, an opportunity to carry on with the music and chat from the comfort of your own home. As always the link will go out on Friday.
A couple of other online events which you may like:-
That irrepressible trio The Young’Uns are back on Folk on Foot (The Young’Uns at Roseberry Topping) performing songs new and old as they climb the Teesside landmark Roseberry Topping. The conversation ranges from learning to laughs, discussing the challenges of writing songs about living people and hearing about the music inspired by the industrial transformation of the area
Award-winning Anglo-Irish folk band, Ranagri consisting of Dónal Rogers, Eliza Marshall, Eleanor Dunsdon, and Jordan Murray feature on Live to Yourt Living Room tomorrow, Friday 24th April at 8.00. I’ve just received the May/August edition of Folklife West, as always packed with news about what’s on in Cornwall and plenty of other places. A couple of events. picked from a long selection are the Fishermans Friends Festival at Stithians Showground from 22nd to 24th May and then Rob Barratt at the Lanner Community Centre on the evening of 6th June. Much more at www.folklife.uk.
And last but certainly not least, it was lovely to get a call from Ruth yesterday. She’s now at home waiting for a date to go to Derriford, much relieved after the noise and bustle of the ward Treliske. Obviously she’ll be taking it very easy for now with Paul’s help. Best wishes to both.
That’s quite enough for now, hope to see you over the weekend
All the best
Nigel
