Hi and welcome to this week’s Dreamers Newsletter
We had an excellent singers night last Sunday, with plenty of good performances and good material. Thanks to all who came along. Two more singers nights now before our next guests on 15th March Lynn Florkiewicz, now well known to most of us at Dreamers and, of course, to many in Penzance. Lynn will be joined by Jim James, together forming No Riff Raff, for an evening of great variety, songs of all sorts, stories and wit.
Just before Lynn’s visit to us, Penzance Folk Club have Paul Downes as their guest on Wednesday 11th March (7.30 at the Bath Inn). Many of us will remember Paul’s visit to Dreamers not so long ago with Mick Ryan. A great evening – with free assistance with guitar tuning thrown in
Hopefully we will be having exchange visits before too long with Penzance Folk Club but, in the meantime, Jonathan has managed to agree a date for our visit to Bodmin Folk Club. This will be on Friday 10th April so there’s a date to put in your diaries. Our last visit to Bodmin was disappointing as the date didn’t suit many people and then the weather was awful so it would be good to make up for that and put on a good show for Dreamers. I’m sure some car sharing can be arranged.
Online, it’s time for the February edition of the Cornish Zoom Folk Club this coming Saturday 28th February, starting at 7.30 as always and finishing by 10.00. Hopefully we’ll get the usual good turn out of good performers from all round the UK and wider and an opportunity to hear people who we can’t often hear. I can send the link to anyone who needs it.
Two nights to mention on the Live to your Living Room site:-
Tomorrow, Friday 27th February at 8.00 there’s a hybrid gig from the Foxlowe arts Centre in Leek featuring Nancy Kerr and James Fagan. Celebrating three decades of music, this performance will be full of stunning vocals, stellar instrumentation, and joyous, poetic lyrics. Partners in music (as well as in life!) Nancy Kerr and James Fagan are two of the most-loved leading lights on the folk scene, double winners of the Best Duoat the Radio 2 Folk Awards.Buy tickets – Nancy Kerr & James Fagan – Zoom
And on Tuesday 3rd March, at 8.00, the featured guests are Salt House. Salt House consists of Ewan MacPherson(vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar), Anna Hughes (vocals, fiddle, viola, tenor guitar) andJenny Sturgeon(vocals, keys, guitar). Music Influenced by the landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, Northumberland, and the Shetland Islands, the band effortlessly blends traditional ballads and contemporary rhythms to create music that makes you stop, reflect, and connect with the world around you. And, finally, I’ve just received a new edition of Folklife Traditions Journal, (www.folklife.co.uk/journal) with a great column by Lamorna Spry about a Forgotten Feast Day in Cornwall – the Crantock Feast Day for St Carantoc with the words for the song Crantock Games (and a tune for it by Cyril Tawney). There are also links to the Cornish National Music Archive on youtube. Well worth a look.
That’s all for this week, hope to see you on Sunday at the Club
All the best
Nigel
