Welcome to this week’s Dreamer’s Newsletter.
I think everyone there would agree we had a tremendous evening at the Club on Sunday with top guests in the shape of Mick Ryan and Paul Downes. Mick and Paul fully lived up to their billing as excellent performers who gave everyone the opportunity to join in some “A level” choruses, not to mention some impromptu guitar tuning assistance from Paul (no names!). It was great to see several excellent visitors too, notably Mark Dowding from Lancashire, who was, of course, a guest at the Club himself recently. An excellent way to celebrate Jonathan’s birthday too.
Three weeks of singers nights to come now giving all our regulars the opportunity to shine, rehearse etc before the first of two pairs of guests in September with Barron Brady on 7th September. Barron Brady comprise Ros Brady and Si Barron from Devon, contemporary songwriters and interpreters of traditional English folk song. More of them nearer the time.
Before that, we have the Cornish Folk Festival in Wadebridge over the next Bank Holiday weekend. There are a number of formal venues as usual and also more informal sessions and “Shanty Street”. Plenty of highly regarded performers and upcoming talent – all the details of who’s on and where together with tickets at https://cornwallfolkfestival.com/wp/event/tickets/
Two other events a bit further ahead to mention.
I don’t often advertise events at other local clubs but I’ll make an exception for Penzance Folk Club who have Alistair Brown as their “guest” on Wednesday 10th September. The Club meets on alternate Wednesdays so their next evening is on 27th August at the Bath Inn in Cornwall Terrace from 7.30.
Quite a number of us went to Penzance a few weeks ago and enjoyed “Grace will Lead Us” with Angeline Morrison, Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne, Jon Bickley and narrator John Palmer. For those who missed that or want to see it again, the show is on Devoran Village Hall on Friday 17th October at 7.30. Highly recommended
And, finally, some more sad news of the death a few days ago of John Heslop a fine musician and songwriter (of such classics as Candles and Cheap Boat for Sale) and his partner Freddo, herself another fine singer. Many of us will have great memories of the both, not least her colourful contributions at the wonderful sessions at the Golden Lion in Stithians. Rest in peace.
That’s all I’ve got time for now, all the best and hope to see you on Sunday evening.
Nigel
