Dreamers newsletter 12th June 2025

Posted By dreamersfolk on Jun 12, 2025

Hello and welcome to this week’s Dreamers Newsletter

I hope it was a good night at the Club last week – we were up country so had to miss it (also the reason for no Newsletter last week. This coming Sunday we have a guest in the shape of Johnny Campbell who’s website is at Johnny Campbell. He’s described as a multidisciplinary folk musician based in Yorkshire. His main focus is promoting the radical history of Northern English working class struggles and celebrations in original and traditional song. Johnny’s releases are diverse, from original studio albums to traditional folk song field recordings, or his last album, a live album recorded on The Faroe Islands. From touring the UK and Europe extensively, his focus of inspiration remains firmly in the North.

This is also the weekend of the Falmouth Shanty Festival so we may be lucky enough to see some of the performer from that staying on to visit the Club as well. All the details of the performers, the programme and the venues are at https://www.falmouthseashanty.co.uk/ Let’s hope the sun shines over the weekend.

Some of us can well remember the days when we had regular visits of a group from Durham including Anne Lamb, a lovely singer. Anne has been in touch and plans to visit us wither this Sunday or the next one (it’s not entirely clear which). She’s well worth hearing and its always great when old friends come back to see us.

After this Sunday, we have singers nights for a while until the visit of Mick Ryan and Paul Downes in early August. The next Cornish Zoom Folk Club is on Saturday 28th June.

Another message from Cornwall Folk Festival emphasises that they are keen to promote young emerging talent, especially those on our doorstep.  Just to mention a few, names so far include Lostwithiel’s Martha Woods, a prolific songwriter and arranger of Cornish tunes, Karenza Lily-May, not yet 18, who plays tunes on the accordion that seem just part of who she is, mining that historic seam that towns with strong musical traditions have. We’ve already had a visit at Dreamers from Kessenyan from Redruth, inspired by the generations of singers around them – Harry Kessell,  joined by brother Olly (16) and 17-year-old Ruby Gillson – a natural talent, with a stunning voice and an ear for a good song. Full details of the Festival at Cornwall Folk Festival: Thu 22- Mon 26 Aug in Wadebridge, North Cornwall

That’s all for this week, hope to see you on Sunday at the Club.

Nigel

p.s. may not be a Newsletter next week as I’ve got more surgery on Wednesday, hopefully minor.
