Welcome to this week’s Dreamers Newsletter.
A change of plans means I’m able to put this together as well as to be able to look forward to the visit of Hunter Muskett to the Club this coming Sunday, 6th April. Hunter Muskett have been going a very long time as a band, consisting of Terry Hiscock – acoustic and electric guitars, slide guitar, piano, vocals, Doug Morter – acoustic and electric guitars, vocals and Rog Trevitt – bass guitar, mandolin, vocals. Those who joined the earlier Dreamers and Cornish Zoom sessions will recognise Terry. They’ve got a comprehensive web-site at Welcome to Hunter Muskett if you’ld like an advance sample. Admission at the new rate of £6, of course.
After that, we’ll have some Singers nights for the rest of April but we also have a visit to Bodmin Folk Club to look forward to on Friday 18th April. Bodmin Folk Club is at St Petroc’s Parish Centre, Priory Rd, Bodmin PL31 2DP with Parking nearby atPriory Car Park, PL31 2DE. It’s an upstairs room but there is a stair lift. There’s no bar but you are welcome to bring your own drinks and snacks (though they do an excellent cup of tea or coffee and chocolate biscuits, including GF). A great opportunity to show what Dreamers can do as well as to hear Bodmin’s own array of talent. Please try to let Jonathan know if you’re coming.
A last reminder that you can still support Cancer Research this Friday night (4th April, 7.30) by going along to hear Rum and Shrub (as well as Out of the Wood) at St Agnes Church . Tickets are £10 each from https://www.atlanticcoastcluster.org.uk/tickets/
Whilst on the subject of charity, I understand that Paul has a 12 string guitar (“for sale” but all proceeds to charity). More details from him or, perhaps, in the next Newsletter.
And there’s an excellent line up for a guitar concert at Praa Sands Community Centre at 7.00 on April 19 in aid of the Alzheimers Society. More info on the centre’s website at www.praasandscommunitycentre.co.uk
Online, Live to Your Living Room has Kris Drever next Wednesday at 8.00 (Kris Drever | Online Gig | Live To Your Living Room). Kris originally comes from the Orkney Islands and has numerous awards to his name. Over the years, he has taught himself to be a songwriter, guitarist and singer of note as well as creating award-winning original songs and instrumental pieces with the trio Lau. He has also had a fruitful solo career exploring the cracks between classic and modern songwriting and the traditional music that he comes from.
Kris is also in the line up for the first of the Ham evening concerts at the Sidmouth Festival this year. That’s on Friday 1st August with subsequent evenings featuring Sharon Shannon, Richard Thompson, Dervish, Katherine Priddy, Dougie Maclean, Jon Boden and the Remnant Kings and, finally on Friday 8th August, Siobhan Miller. More info and tickets from Tickets – The Sidmouth Folk Festival
And, finally for this week, I’ve been asked to publicise a new biography about the life and music of Graeme Miles (“Where Ravens Feed” and numerous other songs). This is “Shadows and Whispers – Graeme Miles remembered” by Ailsa Mackenzie. Among other things it is illustrated with 70 notated songs, writings and sketches showing Graeme’s superb draughtsmanship. All first purchasers receive a complementary MP3 of ten songs from the book, sung by Graeme, and a bonus track of him talking about his On Greatham Marshes song cycle. It’s £24.55 including p&p (UK) from https://buy.stripe.com/aEU16J72A4ix2hGdQY
All the best
