A cracking evening at Dreamers last Sunday with a packed room to hear Baldricks Plan (in their new form) and Out of the Wood. Many thanks to them, to Ruth for organising a very busy evening with two guests and the usual number of floor singers, not to mention a lively audience and brining it all to a close around the usual time. Truly an evening to remember and best wishes to Baldricks Plan and to Out of the Wood for the future.
It was also good to see a number of returning regulars so we can look forward to hearing them this coming Sunday, a singers night, which, if recent singers nights are anything to go by, will be another great evening with plenty of variety. Our next guest is Quantum Penguin on 2nd February, more of that nearer the time. There’a also the Cornish Zoom Folk Club on Saturday 25th January.
Other pressures mean this Newsletter is a day later than usual which, fortunately, enables me to include some additional online events which only cam through this morning.
First of all, tonight (17th January at 8.00), Live to your Living Room has the re-scheduled evening with Karine Polwart, multi-award-winning Scottish songwriter, folk singer, and storyteller. Her songs “evoke a richness of place, hidden histories, scientific curiosity and folklore. Trees and rocks speak. Birds flit in and out of vision. And the stars know everything. She conjures the beauty and magic, the sorrow and complexity of the world out of the corner of her eye, with lyricism and tenderness”. Karine Polwart | Online Gig | Live To Your Living Room
Next Friday, 24th January at 8.00, the same site features another Scottish performer in Anna Massie, one of Scotland’s foremost guitarists. As well as being a skilled multi-instrumentalist and singer renowned for her work with Blazin’ Fiddles and RANT, she also presents BBC Radio Scotland’s award-winning flagship trad music programme, Travelling Folk. Anna is a highly talented musician, presenter and producer. Highly recommended. Anna Massie | Online Gig | Live To Your Living Room
Between these two dates, on Thursday 23rd January at 7.30, Rosslyn Court has Gabriel Moreno and the Quivering Poets. Hard to know what to expect – apparently no show is the same, the songs tread a path between Folk, Latin and cabaret torch song. It’s an oddly effective mix which forms the perfect bed for Gabriel Moreno’s distinctive voice -a blend of Leonard Cohen, Peter Sarstedt, and dare I say it, Rex Harrison.” Neil Diamond has also been mentioned as a comparison! That’s all for this week, plenty more coming up in the coming weeks. Hope to see you on Sunday, all the best
