Welcome to the first Dreamers Newsletter of 2025 after a gap because of holidays and ill health. I hope everyone has had a good break.
It was good to be back at the Club on Sunday night and to see a good turn-out of regulars who braved the atrocious weather – hope everyone got home safely. It also gave us an opportunity to send good wishes to John who has been having a New Year visit to Treliske. Let’s hope he’ll be home soon and feeling better.
Next Sunday sees dual guests with our good friends, Baldricks Plan in a slightly altered line-up sadly without Peter but still with a great selection of songs from some great singers. Baldricks share the evening with Out of the Wood, a new duo bringing together two fine traditional musicians in Jen Dyer and Toby Kessell with a viola, melodeons and guitar as well as the vocals. A real evening to look forward to.
The Cornish Zoom Folk Club went ahead on 28th December and we had a grerat evening, numbers slightly down reflecting other commitments over Christmas and New Year as well as seasonal coughs and colds but still plenty of people and some grerat performances. Next one is on Saturday 25th.January.
Whilst most of the informal online zoom Folk sessions are back underway now, there’s less than usual from the bigger sites though Live to Your Living Room has While Matthews While this Saturday 12th January at 8.00 (While, Matthews & While | Online Gig | Live To Your Living Room). Chris While and Julie Matthews have been a duo for 30 years, during which time they have been Radio 2 Folk Awards winners, released thirteen studio albums and made their mark as songwriters over the years in projects such as The BBC Radio 2 Radio Ballads and the Ballads of Child Migration. Kellie While was the lead singer in the Albion Band, e2K and tours every December alongside Ashley Hutchings, Simon Nicol and Simon Care in the Albion Christmas Band. A rare opportunity to hear the three together.
Next week, on Friday 17th January, the same site features Karine Polwart – more of that next week.
Finally a reminder to look at the excellent FolkLife UK magazine (www.folklife.uk) if you should be travelling the country and looking for a folk evening out. It’s packed with news and venues.
That’s all for this week, hope to see you on Sunday
All the best
Nigel.
