Dreamers newsletter 5th December 2024

Back to the Dreamers Newsletter after a week’s holiday

One always expects a great evening with Rum and Shrub Shantymen and last Sunday’s visit certainly did not disappoint with lots of great singing – by audience as well as guests – some familiar material and some less so and, of course, plenty of good humour all round.

Now we are in December, we can start planning for Christmas. This coming Sunday, 8th December, is a singers night (and recent singers nights have been consistently excellent) and your last opportunity to book for the Club Dinner on 15th December and choose from the menu. It’s £15 each on top of a generous club subsidy. It’s also an opportunity to perform something a little different (only if you want to) but do let Jonathan know what you are planning, just to make sure it doesn’t overlap with anyone else’s plans. Then on 22nd December, the last Saturday before Christmas, it’s a night of seasonal songs.

The Club is then closed for the 29th December but there’s no need to go without your ration of folk music as the Cornish Zoom Folk Club is the previous night, on Saturday  28th December with more seasonal gaiety for those who can manage to keep going! As always, just ask me for the link – it starts at 7.30 and runs till around 10.

Just a couple of online events to mention but both sound great.

Next Wednesday, 11th December at 8.00, Live to Your Living Room hosts John Kirkpatrick. Carolling and Crumpets is the title of unforgettable song telling the Nativity story from the point of view of the animals in the stable. A heart-warming look at the timeless rituals found in the folklore and folk music of England at Midwinter, dressed up in a glittering finery of toe-tapping tunes and cracking choruses. Guaranteed to keep the spirits cheery and the cold at bay. John Kirkpatrick | Online Gig | Live To Your Living Room

And two days later, at 7.45 on Friday 13th December, Live to Your Living Room has a hybrid gig with Downend Folk and Roots from Christ Church Downend, nr Bristol. This features five leading lights of the British roots scene joining forces to create a festive folk band like no other – A Winter Union. Expect soaring harmonies and exquisite musicianship as the 5-piece blast through a repertoire of brand new, specially written songs, fresh arrangements of traditional carols both well-loved and little-known, and seasonal classics from both sides of the Atlantic. A Winter Union | Online Gig | Live To Your Living Room

That’s all for now, hope to see you in Four Lanes on Sunday
