Hi, here’s the Dreamers Newsletter for this week
Last Sunday’s guest night was a bit of a surprise as Steve Hunt who was due to be out guest with Neil Davey sadly tested positive for covid so had to drop out – best wishes to Steve for a quick recovery. However, Hilary Coleman, recently seen at the Club with the Red River Singers and, like Neil, a member of Dalla, was able to step in at short notice and we were able to have a great evening of music and song with the Dalla Duo. And that was (again) in spite of regular “applause” from the heavy rain beating on the skylight. Many thanks to both.
It was also great to see Roger Bryant back to Dreamers and we’ll look forward to hearing his singing again before long. I also understand that Pip Franklin is making a good recovery from his hernia (despite a rather adventurous time at Treliske) and aims to be back with us, at least in a sedentary capacity, this coming Sunday when we have another Singers Night. Following that, on Sunday 27th October, we have a visit from Bodmin Folk Club and then, on the first Sunday in November, more guests with Our Atlantic Roots. Looking further ahead we have Rum and Shrub as guests in December and our Christmas meal on 15th December. With Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night amongst all this and Christmas still to come, it looks like a lively couple of months.
There’s plenty coming up online too in the immediate future:-
· Short notice but tonight (17th October) at 7.30 Angeline Morrison and Clarke Camilleri are at Rosslyn Court. Angeline achieved widespread acclaim with her 2022 album, The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience andhas just released her new album, Ophelia, and she’s off on tour to promote it, with support from Clarke Camilleri. A hybrid gig with the first half on line and the rest for the live audience only. Angeline Morrison /Clarke Camilleri – Rosslyn Court
· Tomorrow night, 18th October at 7.45 there’s another rhybrid gig, this time from Downend Folk and Roots near Bristol with Rachael McShane and the Cartographers. Rachael is a renowned folk singer, cellist, fiddle and viola player from the North East of England with a long list of credits to her name. She first gained fame as an original member of the award-winning folk big band Bellowhead and, more recently has lent her voice to a new adaptation of The Transports alongside The Young’uns, Faustus, Nancy Kerr, Greg Russell and Matthew Crampton. · And next Thursday, 24th October, there are competing attractions. Rosslyn Court features Lizzy Hardingham at 7.30 in a hybrid gig whilst Live to Your Living Room has the Sheffield based (originally Australian) Marilla Homes (links for more info on these are Lizzy Hardingham – Rosslyn Court and Marilla Homes | Online Gig | Live To Your Living Room)
Meanwhile, the indefatigable Matthew Bannister has yet another episode on Folk on Foot, this time with Dan Whitehouse, a Stourbridge based singer and songwriter whose album “Voices From The Cones” was based on recordings of the memories of glass workers there. In this extraordinary episode he takes us to a former glass works – now a college teaching craft skills to neurodivergent students – and sings the songs inspired by this fascinating industry. That’s all for this week, hope to see you on Sunday, all the best
