Dreamers newsletter 3rd October 2024

Welcome to this week’s Dreamers Newsletter.

Quite an evening at the Club last Sunday with a very wet day and the rain beating down on the roof at times. Full marks to all who came along through flooded roads and managed to perform well in spite of the noise of the rain. All well managed as always by Pip and I think we were all glad to have a slightly earlier finish to be able to get home ok.

Another Singers Night this Sunday when we hope to see some of the visitors who have come down for the Falmouth Voice Tour. A reminder that that is at the Membly Hall Hotel, Cliff Rd, Falmouth (TR11 4NT). The first session is in the Ballroom at around 8.00 of Friday (4th) with a Shanty session in the Waterfront Bar on Custom House Quay on Saturday at 12.00 followed in the evening by the main session in the Hotel Dining Room starting around 8.00. Then there’s a final session in the bar on Sunday 6th. It would be great if plenty of locals were able to put in an appearance in support of this event which Gaye always enjoyed so much

A definite date for the diary. We’ve just had confirmation that there will be a celebration event for Gaye’s life on Saturday 2nd November from 2.00 till 7.00 at the Membly Hall Hotel in Falmouth (as above). Some of the detail is still to be finalised (so watch this space) but there will be some music and also a buffet tea at around 5.00.

The next guests at the Club will be Neil Davey and Steve Hunt, well known to many of us, on Sunday 13th November. More of them next week.

The Cornish Zoom Folk Club seems to go from strength to strength with a great turn out for the September session last weekend, performers and audience from all over the UK not to mention New Zealand, Australia and Spain and a really high standard. The next session will be on Saturday October 26th.

Another reminder that Cornwall Folk Festival and Launceston Folk Club are combining to organise the opening night of Gigspanner’s tour to preview their new album on Friday October 18th at Launceston Town Hall. Six top musicians – Peter Knights sublime violinSasha Trochetsworld-music percussion, the flowing lines ofRoger Flack on guitarHannah Martin‘s gorgeous vocals andPhillip Henrysoften sitar-like dobro and last but not leastBellowhead founder and melodeon player extraordinaireJohn Spiers. Another event from the increasingly active Endelienta Arts up near Port IsaacLater this month, on Friday 25th October at 7.30 in St Endellion Church, folk singer storyteller Reg Meuross and kora master Suntou Susso will be performing Reg’s song cycle, Stolen From God. More info and tickets at Stolen From God – Endelienta Arts

Much nearer home, Devoran Acoustic Sessions have a a tea-time concert on Sunday 24th November in the Village Hall featuring Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman (as well as tea/coffee and hevva cake). Starting at 2.30 (so you could come on to Dreamers afterwards), more info and tickets for this one at Devoran Acoustic Sessions presents Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman – Tea Treat Concert – What’s On Truro, Cornwall (visittruro.org.uk)

Another new episode on Folk on Foot as the cellist, singer and environmental campaigner Sarah Smout takes a beautiful summer walk along the River Wharfe in North Yorkshire. Along the way she explains how her love of the natural world inspires her music and stops to play, sing and read one of her poems. Sarah Smout Along The River Wharfe to Fleet Moss (folkonfoot.com)

And, finally for this week, Live to Your Living Room has Mark Radcliffe and David Boardman singing, songwriting, strumming buddies from the badlands of the Cheshire Plain. Their act is one of classic simplicity: two voices, two guitars, some great original songs, the odd carefully chosen cover and the occasional rambling anecdote. Mark Radcliffe And David Boardman | Live To Your Living Room

So, plenty to look forward to and enjoy. Hope to see you sometime over the Voice Tour weekend, all the best
