Hello and welcome to this week’s Dreamers Newsletter

A good singers night at the Club last week and looking forward to another this coming Sunday. After that we can look forward to the visit of the Red River Singers on Sunday 15th September.

Led by Hilary Coleman, The Red River Singers are an informal group who began in 2012. They like to sing mostly in the pub, specialising in Cornish songs, including well-known pub songs, older folksongs and those in the Cornish Language. Plenty more about them and some samples of their offering on line.

The enterprising Devoran Village Hall runs occasional acoustic folk evenings, often excellent. The next, on Friday 27th September (7.30) is “Ghosts, Werewolves and Countryfolk – The Songs of Sabine Baring- Gould. Jim Causley and Miranda Sykes join narrator John Palmer to mark the centenary of his death with songs and stories from his best-sellinhg books about Ghosts and the like. Tickets are £16 from the Visitor Information Centre on Boscawen St in Truro (01872 274555) or via the link at Devoran Acoustic Sessions presents Ghosts, Werewolves & Countryfolk – The Songs of Sabine Baring-Gould – What’s On Truro, Cornwall (visittruro.org.uk)

The following weekend sees the 2024 edition of the Cornish Voice Tour which brings together performers and friends from further afield at the Membly Hall Hotel on the sea front at Falmouth (TR11 4NT). There’s an evening sing in the ball room at 8.00 on Friday 4th October, a shanty sing at the Waterfront Bar on Custom House Quay at midday on the Saturday with dinner at 6.30 in the dining room followed by the main session of chorus songs and music. There’s a final sing in the hotel bar at midday on Sunday 6th (though wew always hope at least some participants will come on to Dreamers in the evening. No need to book unless you want to stay over or join the dinner on Saturday (ring the hotel at 01326 312869 if so). Always a great weekend, contact Pip Franklin (07778 739341 or di.franklin236@gmail.com if you need more info.

Two online sessions to mention this week:-

Tonight, 5th September at 7.30, Rosslyn Court features Songs of the Folk, seasoned performers from North Carolina who perform original American folk blues songs that harken back to roots music from the American South, as well as folk revival artists of the north-eastern US. For med by husband and wife A.T. and Lauren Cason, they aim to preserve the genre, as well as add to it.Songs of the Folk – Rosslyn Court

A week later, on Thursday 12th September at 8.00 p.m. Live to Your Living Room has a very familiar figure in Steve Knightly. Probably best known for his work in Show of Hands, Steve has won no less than four BBC Folk Awards, played venues of all sorts all over the country (including the Royal Albert Hall no less than six times) and was named Songwriter of the 90s. Steve’s talent as a songwriter has been recognised with numerous accolades. He was named Tom Robinson’s Songwriter of the 90s and has received four BBC Folk Awards. He has played over 4000 gigs in various venues including folk clubs, community centres, theatres, festivals, churches, and cathedrals. His Grow Your Own Gig tour reached 350 village halls. A true icon in the music industry. Tickets and more info at Steve Knightley | Online Gig | Live To Your Living Room

That’s more than enough for this week. Hope to see you on Sunday

All the best

Nigel
