Dreamers newsletter 25th July 2024

Posted By dreamersfolk on Jul 25, 2024

Welcome to this week’s Dreamers Newsletter. Let me start by wishing a very Happy Birthday to Roger Bryant today – let’s hope that he and Gaye are having a really good day (and that we’ll see them soon at the Club).

After a few singers nights, we have guests this Sunday, 28th July, in the shape of Louise Rogan and her dad, Chris Rogan. Louise is a fairly recent arrival on the folk scene, described as having a pure and soaring voice. Keyboard and acoustic guitar, traditional favourites and self-penned songs, their debut album together (“Things that Matter”) was described in FATEA magazine as one of the best debut releases in the traditional genre. They’re getting lots of high profile bookings (including Sidmouth Festival) and Louise is currently working on her first solo album. All supported, of course, by an array of local talent! Next guest on 18th August will be Kevin Dempsey.

Before that, on Saturday night 27th, we have the July session of the Cornish Zoom Folk Club. Starting as usual at 7.30, we look forward to a good line-up of performers and audience from far and near and the usual high standard, an opportunity to hear less familiar faces from your own home. The Friday Folk sessions, based in south-east Cornwall have decided to move to a monthly basis for a while (second Thursday) and are encouraging their folk to come along to the Cornish Zoom (as some already do). If you don’t already get the link, just ask me.

Some sad news to relay – our friend Mike Kessell, one of the great figures of the Cornish folk scene over many years, died this week after being ill for some time. Mike was an occasional visitor to Dreamers in recent times, certainly less than we would have liked and he’ll be much missed. That’s all the information I have at this stage but if we hear about funeral arrangements etc, we’ll try to pass that on.

Finally the full programme for the Sidmouth Festival from 2nd to 9th August is available at Homepage – The Sidmouth Folk Festival together with lots of information about performers, venues etc. Whilst some events are already sold out, advance tickets for others are available up to 28th July.

That’s all for this week, a bit shorter than usual because of other pressures. Hope to see you at the Club on Sunday night.

All the best

Nigel
