Dreamers newsletter 9th May 2024

Hi, time for this week’s Dreamers Newsletter

First of all, many, many, thanks to Harry Bird for helping give us such a great night at the Club last Sunday. Lots of good songs, many derived from what has clearly been a very interesting and varied life, stretching from Knoydart to Bilbao. All the regulars who were asked to perform made great contributions too so the scene was all set for Harry when the time came for his sets, lots of humour and chorus singing. Altogether an evening to remember.

On now to another Singers Night this coming Sunday followed by the visit of the Shackleton Trio on Sunday 19th May. This is just the latest stop for them on a long tour covering clubs and festivals all over England with a new album to come in the autumn, celebrating 10 years performing together. The trio features Georgia Shackleton (fiddle, vocals), Aaren Bennett (guitar) and Nic Zuppardi (mandolin and banjo). Combining mandolin, fiddle, guitar and banjo with powerful three part harmonies. the unmistakable sound of The Shackleton Trio brings to life the stories of their native East Anglia, and beyond.

Next week, on 16th May, the resurgent Wadebridge Folk Club, which meets at the NT Café, Pentireglaze, PL27 6QY has a special night with Richard Trethewey. Born in the Clay Country, Richard is a singer, fiddle and cittern player delivering a distinct take on Cornish music, giving Cornwall a truly authentic voice. Passionate about unearthing near-forgotten gems of Cornish history, Richard breathes life and emotion into what might otherwise be overlooked. An exciting new date for the diary is the rare solo appearance of Jon Boden at the Old Bakery Studios in Truro on Saturday 25th May. Bellowhead lead singer and recipient of more awards than you can shake a fiddle bow at in a rare solo performance. According to the Guardian the “stand out performer of his generation’ of traditional English folk artists, but one whose repertoire extends far beyond the boundaries of the genre. It’s a long way for most of us but there’s an opportunity to see and hear Sarah McQuaid at Boscastle Village Hall on 1st June (7.30 to 10). Sarah McQuaid is a singer, songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist, living in West Cornwall but touring throughout the World. Sarah McQuaid in Boscastle – Snappy Tickets
No time for more this week, looking forward to seeing lots of you at the Club on Sunday.

All the best
