Posted By dreamersfolk on Apr 26, 2024

Hi and welcome to this week’s Dreamers Newsletter

Another good Singers night last weekend and another to look forward to this coming Sunday (which, sadly, we’ll miss) followed by the visit of our old friend Harry Bird on Sunday 5th May. Harry has spent the last 15 years touring all over Europe and beyond, an experienced circus and theatre musician, a versatile storyteller with a love of rhythm and rhyme, allegory and dance. Energetic, feel-good shows and an evening not to be missed. And two weeks after that we have more visitors in the shape of the Shackleton Trio.

This coming Saturday, 27th April, sees the latest session of the Cornish Zoom Folk Club. This emerged from the various online clubs in Cornwall during the dreadful days of lockdown and has now developed its own following of performers and listeners from all over the UK and further afield who like to spend an evening with some great entertainment without leaving home. As always the link will go out tomorrow, Friday, to those on the list – if you’re not and would like it, just ask me.

As you know, the Cornwall Folk Festival is at the end of August with tickets available from Full Festival Tickets – Full, Day Tickets, FAR Stage and Workshops – Cornwall Folk Festival They are very active fundraising in other ways and have another General Knowledge Pub Quiz Fundraiser at The Ship, Gonvena Hill, Wadebridge, on Wednesday 8th May from 7.30pm, £5. Questions from across the board, with some on music, but plenty on geography, science, sport and more,

And, much further ahead on friday Oct 18th, the Festival has a joint venture with Launceston Folk Club featuring the Gigspanner Big Band. The Band comprises ex-Steeleye Span Peter Knight — a truly gifted violinist — additional and complementary violin, dobro and harmonica from duo Edgelarks, and Bellowhead co-founder Jon Spiers on melodeon. Tickets from Gigspanner Big Band New Album Preview Tour – Cornwall Folk Festival

Another one further ahead is the long farewell tour from the Oysterband. A long, long tour indeed but coming to St Petroc’s Church in Bodmin on Friday 8th November. Tickets at
https://alonglonggoodbye.live

The celebrated poet and wordsmith Brian Bilston is coming down to the south-west in May. Gigs include one at the Falmouth Pavilion on May – tickets from https://brianbilston.com/events/ He’s also performing in Launceston.

And, finally, a couple of websites which might be of interest:-

·        “Talking Stories is the UK’s “first leading global No.1 Radio Programme for All Listeners and Tellers of Tales Myths and Legends for All the Family”. Stories of the sea, poetry, meditation. This kicks off this Sunday 28th April at 19.00 UK but once launched it will be available to listen to time after time and anytime. https://www.mixcloud.com/EastLondonRadio/talking-stories-86/

·        Tradfolk (Tradfolk – Folk Culture Now) is a regular online magazine with a mixture of folk dance and song. The latest edition includes news of the fuss caused by nude Morris Dancers in Shepton Mallett!

That’s all for now, hope Sunday goes well and look forward to seeing you the week after with Harry Bird.

All the best

Nigel
