Rob Barratt
Thanks to all who came along to Dreamers last Sunday, another good singers night, this time somewhat in two halves as several people had to leave at half time for various reasons, not least the outbreak of roadworks making it hard to go from A to B without exploring the rest of the alphabet en route!
This Sunday we have our last guest of the year in the person of Rob Barratt, fantastic exponent of the spoken word, his own compositions which have reduced many audiences to hopeless mirth. We can expect plenty of opportunities to participate. I gather Rob has recently returned from a tour of Australia – hopefully this went better than the previous attempt when, as I understand it, he arrived only for covid to break out leading to a hasty return to Cornwall before he could do any performances!
After that we have another singers night on 10th December followed by our Christmas meal and evening on 17th. No doubt we’ll hear more about this over the next two weeks but previous years have featured a mixture of lovely carols and more doubtful Christmas songs and performances of all sorts. We’ll see. Penzance Folk club is starting Christmas even earlier with it special seasonal night on Wednesday 6th December.
Even with a good number of apologies, the November session of the Cornish Zoom last Saturday was again a great success under Alistair’s expert management with, by my count, no less than 19 different performers (including 3 from abroad) and a good view folk just watching. Dreamers are used to offering in Cornish – this Zoom session had one partly in Thai, surely a first, about their Fesitval with floating boats made of banana leaves. The December Zoom will probably be on Saturday 30th December – still to be finally confirmed but, of those who have expressed a view, that seems to work best for more.
As mentioned last week, there’s plenty coming up online, particularly on Live to Your Living Room with Lucy Farrell tonight (30th November) at 8.00 p.m (Lucy Farrell | Online Gig | Live to Your Living Room). and Alistair Anderson on Saturday 2nd December, also at 8.00 (Alistair Anderson | Online Gig | Live to Your Living Room). More information about both and tickets through the links.
Next week the site has the Bella Hardy Christmas Show on Thursday 7th December (8.00). From Edale in Derbyshire, Christmas songs have long been her local speciality, both local carols and well-known classics like Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. A lovely voice, songs and stories and she’s joined by Sam Carter on guitar. The Bella Hardy Christmas Show | Live To Your Living Room
That’s all for this week, hope to see you at the Club on Sunday (assuming we can get there – it’s been snowing here this morning and, as I write, I gather an accident has blocked one of the roads into Four Lanes. Take care!
All the best
Nigel
