Dreamers newsletter 19th October 2023

Another wonderful guest evening for Dreamers last Sunday with Bruce Watson from Melbourne. Some great humerous songs – “I’m on the Train” and “What do you know about the Pangolin” to name but two but also plenty of more serious material, all adding up to an evening with lots of variety in which we all joined with our usual enthusiasm – “that’s as good as it gets” as Bruce said afterwards. And, of course, thanks to all who joined in the band assembled for the occasion.

After an unusual run of guests (and plenty of other visitors) we have several Singers nights coming up now before the visit of Kana on 12th November so good opportunities for the regulars to hone their skills.

Angeline Morrison has made a big name for herself with her ”Sorrow Songs” and other music. Not only is she appearing at the Calstock Arts Centre on Friday 24th November but also at the Cornish Bank in Falmouth on Sunday 26th November.

Looking out of the window at Storm Babet as I write this, it’s perhaps not surprising that most of the news this week concerns online activity. Our own Cornish Zoom Folk Club is on Saturday 28th October but in the meantime we have:-

Thanks to John and Marion for the link to the Celtic Colours Festival. This was recently but there are a whole lot of concerts with some good performers all available on line at https://celtic-colours.com/videos/

Tonight, Thursday 19th October, Live to Your Living Room features the Grace Smith Trio. Acclaimed fiddle and viola player Grace Smith is joined by Sam Partridge (Concertina, Electric Guitar) and Bevan Morris (Double Bass) in this innovative ensemble, which offers a fresh take on folk. The trio are all well-known faces on the scene, with Grace spending the last ten years playing with the likes of the Monster Ceilidh Band, Katie Doherty and the Navigators and Cri du Canard, whilst Sam and Bevan are both members of Pons Aelius (among others!). educators. The Grace Smith Trio | Live To Your Living Room

A celebration of the start of the Celtic New Year this Saturday, 21st October, from 10.00 to 15.00. Not cheap this one but a lot in the day – music, workshops, stories etc. More details from www.silejoyce.wixsite.com/seasonstories

One zoom session on the other side of the world comes from the Portland Folk Music society in Portland, Oregon. Annually they have a world-wide weekend event with many timings to suit their European friends – this year it’s from this Friday, 20th October, till Sunday. It’s all on zoom and seems to be free if you register at FallSong 2023 – Portland Folkmusic Society. The latest schedule of booked performers is also there.

That’s all for this week, don’t forget to send me any news of events etc which you would like to be passed on. Hope to see you at the Club on Sunday

All the best

Nigel
