Dreamers newsletter 28th September 2023

Posted By dreamersfolk on Sep 28, 2023

With John Conolly as our guest, we couldn’t fail to have a cracking night at Dreamers last Sunday and so it proved with a great evening of songs and stories from him, ably supported by some of our regulars. Many thanks to all.

This Sunday we have a Singers Night to look forward to so another opportunity for all Dreamers folk who want to strut their stuff again. Then, unusually, we have two guest nights running.

On Sunday 8th October, we welcome our old friends, Lynne Heraud and Pat Turner who are staying on for an extra night (after the Cornish Voice Tour in Falmouth) to entertain us in their inimitable way. Not only a variety of instruments but, occasionally, some dressing up and (as their website puts it) “a unique blend of stunning song and harmony” not to mention plenty of humour. Great performers and it’ll be lovely to have them with us again. For a preview, their web-site at Lynne Heraud & Pat Turner (lynneandpat.co.uk) has samples of their offering and details of their albums.

The following week, 15th October, we have our second visitor of the year from Australia in the shape of Bruce Watson (not to mention his wife, Jill). Bruce is a major Australian songwriter and performer who has entertained at clubs and festivals around the world as well as around his home city of Melbourne. Some us heard him regularly on zoom during lockdown (when he wrote a song on each of the first 30 days locally – who can forget “On the Train” and “What do you Know about the Pangolin”, both on his latest album “Year of Wonders”. We’re lucky to have him at Dreamers.

Such visitors spread the name and fame of Dreamers around the world. The Canowindra Phoenix in New South Wales this week featured a happy picture of our other recent Australian visitor, Nerida Cuddy, on stage in front of our banner with some lovely text.

We also had another great session on the Cornish Zoom last Saturday with no less than 22 different performers, all well managed by Malcolm and Hilary. It was particularly nice to welcome back a past guest at Dreamers, Nick Dow, who is recovering well from his heart attack and being encouraged to resume his old life. The next zoom session is on Saturday 28th October.

Earlier on Saturday saw the re-launch of Launceston Folk Club with a full day of folk activity at Launceston Town Hall. They seem to be planning monthly concerts at the Town Hall (not always on the same day each month) – more detail can be found at Home – Launceston Folk Club Best wishes to them.

As I mentioned last week, The Askew Sisters are on Live to Your Living Room tonight, Thursday 28th September – details at The Askew Sisters | Online Gig | Live To Your Living Room.

The following week, on Friday 6th October at 8.00 p.m., the same site has a newish band in Tarren, music both original and traditional, rooted in the English tradition. Tarren is made up of Bristol-based artists Sid Goldsmith (from former Dreamers guests Jimmy Aldridge & Sid Goldsmith), Alex Garden and Danny Pedler. Their debut album REVEL was released in 2022 to high acclaim and was compared with the work of Faustus and Lau’s legendary debut album Lightweights and Gentlemen. More detail of this one at Tarren | Online Gig | Live To Your Living Room

And, finally for this week, we hear that old Dreamers regulars Sue and Rob Ford, now living in France, are planning to visit us in November. More detail when we hear it.

No more now, hope to see you at the Club on Sunday and, indeed, on the following two Sundays.

All the best

Nigel
