Dreamers newsletter 31st August 2023

Posted By dreamersfolk on Sep 5, 2023

Welcome to this week’s Dreamers Newsletter.

What a strange Sunday night it felt last week with no Club. I hope everyone managed to have a good evening all the same – it sounds as though the Festival at Wadebridge went very well so we’ll look forward to hearing about that.

One event which certainly went well was the Cornish Zoom Folk Club on Saturday night. On what looked like an evening with many competing attractions, we had no less than 25 different performers from all round the UK as well as several from further afield (including 3 from North America) and a very high standard. It was an evening when one would have wanted to go on hearing more and more but we do stick to the 10.00 p.m. end time. Thanks to all who came along but, especially, to our MCs, Brian and Jenny Hunt from the North East who managed all this brilliantly.

Back to Dreamers and this weekend (Sunday 3rd September), we again welcome Reg Meuross as our guest, the first in a series of great visitors over the next few weeks. Reg was described by no less than Martin Carthy as “a mighty songwriter and equally fine singer”. For a preview, head to his own web-site at Reg Meuross | singer-songwriter, storyteller After that we have a couple of singers nights followed by the visit of John Connolly of Fiddlers Green fame (and much more) on 24th September.

Suffering from withdrawal symptoms with no Dreamers on Sunday, we went to Penzance Folk Club on Wednesday, lots of lovely people and music and a good smattering of visitors too. Whilst there, I was reminded of the St Ives Festival which starts next Saturday (9th September) and runs for the next two weeks. The main web-site is at Home – St Ives September Festival 2023 from where you can easily find the impressive list of music events. A few are sold out but most still have tickets available (including our friends, Baldrick’s Plan at the Arts Club on Friday 22nd September).

Folk on Foot is run by Matthew Bannister and, rather than the usual fare, the latest addition to the site is the story of his walk from Wickham Festival in Hampshire to Folk East in Suffolk raising money for the charity Help Musicians. You can contribute via the site (Folk On Foot) and also watch his diaries – each evening he was joined in a pub by musicians who sang and played in support.

A reminder that the new season on Live to Your Living Room kicks off on Thursday 7th September with Maclaine Colston & Saul Rose. They’ll be followed on later dates by the Feminist Folk Club, The Black Feathers, Melrose Quartet and The Askew Sisters with much more to come after that. More info at Events | Live Music Online Gig | Live to your Living Room

No time for more this week. We’re away for a little while next week but I’ll try to find time (and news!) for another Newsletter before we go. In the meantime, hope to see you on Sunday for the bisit of Reg Meuross.

 All the best
