Dreamers newsletter 1st June 2023

Posted By dreamersfolk on Jun 4, 2023

Hi and welcome to a short Newsletter this week, too much on today, I’m afraid.

A great evening at the Club last Sunday. Quite a few people away but still lots of good songs, lots of humour and all ably managed by Robin so thanks for that. We also had another good night at the Cornish Zoom Folk Club the previous night with Malcolm and Hilary as MCs – 17 separate performers by my count and as always some excellent material. Next zoom session is on June 24th.

It’s another singer night this coming Sunday followed on Sunday 11th June by the visit of Na Mara. Na Mara consists of Rob Garcia and Paul McNamara. Rob (mandolin, mandola, bandurria and classical guitar) is of Spanish descent – his parents arrived in the UK as child refugees from the Spanish Civil War in 1937 whilst Paul (guitar and voice) is originally from Middlesborough. They are currently based in St Albans. In recent years Na Mara have built a big reputation for fine story-telling and musicianship, performing around the UK as well as in France, Spain and elsewhere. They deliver their own material in traditional style on contemporary and historical topics with English translations of songs from Breton, French and Quebecois traditions as well as the Spanish Celtic regions of Asturias and Galicia.  They have released several albums – more info at Home | na-mara  Sounds like an exciting evening and we are lucky to have them at Dreamers – soon after their visit to Cornwall,  they will feature at Rosslyn Court on June 15th –  CONCERTS | Rosslyn Court.

Events come thick and fast at this time of year. After Na Mara, the next weekend (16th/18th June) is, of course, the Falmouth Shanty Festival – the programme is now online at Programme – Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival (falmouthseashanty.co.uk)  If the weather holds up this should be a brilliant weekend. 16th  June is also the start of the Golowan Festival which runs right on until 25th June – full details online at Golowan – Penzance’s celebration of midsummer (golowanfestival.org)

Not so much online as we move into summer with all the other attractions but there’s another episode in the Folk of Foot series with the Fife based singer James Yorkston and the Cardigans lead singer Nina Persson on an atmospheric walk through Tentsmuir Forest on the Scottish coast just north of St Andrews. Their voices blend beautifuly as they sing under the shade of the trees. Folk On Foot

Enough for now, enjoy the sunshine and hope to see you on Sunday at the Club
