Hi and welcome to this week’s Newsletter. Definitely a short one, crazy day today.
We had a very busy night at the Club last Sunday with most regulars there and some unexpected surprises as well. It’s another Singers Night this Sunday (7th May) featuring a farewell performance from John and Marion, all being well before their departure for the North.
That’s followed by the visit of Tom Lewis the following week (14th May). Tom will be well known to many members – At the age of 80, Tom is still touring widely at the age of 80. Tom is renowned for composing ‘The Last Shanty’ (A Sailor Ain’t A Sailor), ”Sailor’s Prayer’ (Send Down A Dove), ‘Legend’ (Marching Inland), plus many other contemporary songs of the sea that have become folk standards, sung by more than 40 groups around the world. For more information, see his own website at Tom Lewis | Welcome or seek him out on youtube. This should be a real highlight of the Dreamers year.
Also on that weekend, on Saturday 13th May, Jon and Jill are featured at the Celtic Music Day at the Old Church in St Day. Hanterhir are the headline act but there’s lots more with a wide cast of local musicians. The event runs from 4.00 p.m. till 10.00 p.m. Tickets are £7.50, available on the door or by following the link at EVENTS 2023 | St Day Old Church
News of past guests. Will Finn and Rosie Calvert are on the road again though, sadly, not in this direction. They’ve got a short seasonal video on youtube at Hail! Hail! The First of May – YouTube and we are promised a joint, livestreamed show from them and some other past guests, Ninebarrow, in July. More of that nearer the time. And Christina Alden and Alex Patterson are also on the road again with a new single ‘The Starless Sea’ on the way.
Online and tonight (4th May), Rosslyn Court has Edwina Hayes. Said to be one of the finest female singer/songwriters this country has produced in years. Edwina brings together English folk, Americana and the rich Northern singer/songwriter tradition to create a sound that’s truly her own. She’s toured with such notable performers as Jools Holland, Van Morrison, Nanci Griffith and Loudon Wainwright III to name just a few. The first hour is livestreamed on YouTube. You can watch it any time after 7.30 on the night of the concert.
That’s all for today, see you on Sunday
All the best
Nigel
