Dreamers Newsletter 8th December 2022

Posted By dreamersfolk on Dec 8, 2022

Welcome to this week’s Dreamers Newsletter.

A real fun evening at the Club last Sunday with Dan and Jacey (a.k.a. Ale and Cakes) bringing us an evening of (mainly) bluegrass material – all the way from Redruth with some unexpected accompaniment, firstly loud cheers from the bar whenever England scored and then, in their finale, with Roger and Pip joining in for a spirited “Wagon Wheel”. Good stuff.

Another Singers night this coming Sunday (and hoping that Four Lanes escapes the worse of the expected cold weather) followed by the Dreamers Christmas Dinner and evening on 18th December. Sorry but there will be no raffle that evening, not even of cuddly toys! Then the Club will be closed on Christmas Day and on the following Sunday 1st January reopening on Sunday 8th January. The Newsletter will also be taking a couple of weeks off. Our first guest of 2023 will be Jim Causley on 22nd January.

A reminder that the Cornish Zoom Folk Club will be a week early this month on 17th December.

Very best wishes to Hilary who has tested positive for covid – get well soon. That gives an opportunity for anyone who would like to take over her tickets for the Jackie Oates Voice Workshop and then Concert at Devoran Village Hall this coming Saturday 10th December (that’s one ticket for each event). The Workshop is in the afternoon from 2.00 and the concert from 7.30 to 9.00  – let me know urgently if you would be interested.

Thanks to John for one I missed  – the MG ALBA Scots Traditional Music Awards returned to Dundee’s Caird Hall, live & on screens, for its celebratory 20th anniversary on Sunday 4th December 2022. Na Trads is still available online at https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001fydp Loads of great performers.

Plenty more online with Christmas coming up:-

·        As mentioned last week, tonight 8th December Martin Carthy is at Rosslyn Court at 7.30 with the first hour livestreamed. Tickets from WeGotTickets | Simple, honest ticketing | Martin Carthy live at Rosslyn Court

·        On Saturday 10th December (8.00 p.m.), Live to Your Living Room features The Furrow Collective, an Anglo-Scottish band comprised of four of the folk scene’s finest talents – Lucy Farrell (viola, voice & saw), Rachel Newton (harp, fiddle, voice), Emily Portman (banjo, concertina, voice) and Alasdair Roberts (guitars, voice). The group were drawn together by a shared love of traditional song and balladry of England, Scotland and beyond, and an open, intuitive approach to collaboration. This is a hybrid gig in collaboration with Live At Sam’s in Sheffield – it’s sold out in person, but you can still watch online. Tickets from The Furrow Collective | Live to Your Living Room

·       And on Monday night, 12th December (8.00 p.m.) on the same site, GreenMatthews present their new festive show “Midwinter Revels”. Spanning several centuries, GreenMatthews’ Midwinter Revels is a celebration of Yuletide Past guaranteed to warm the cockles of even the most Scrooge-like heart. Featuring Christmas carols, winter folk songs, toe-tapping tunes and a plethora of weird and wonderful instruments, the show is brought to life with GreenMatthews’ trademark wit and humour. GreenMatthews: Midwinter Revels | Live to Your Living Room

·       One for the diary perhaps – on Wednesday 21st December, Live to Your Living Room has Karine Polwart – more detail next week.

It seems a bit early to be thinking about next August (24th to 28th) but I’ve just heard that early bird tickets are now on sale for the Cornwall Folk Festival in Wadebridge. Three evening in Wadebridge Town Hall with Gigspanner, Kinnaris Quintet, and a mystery top act (not named due to an agent embargo). With support from Geoff Lakeman and Rob Murch. Our Atlantic Roots and Windjammer. 16% off for early bookings from Earlybird Full Festival Tickets – Cornwall Folk Festival

That’s quite enough from me, take care and all the best
