Welcome to the first Newsletter of December.
Another lovely night at the Club last Sunday with added visitors coming on to Dreamers from the St Ives Shanty Shout adding to our enjoyment, some wonderful tunes from Pip and everyone on good form again. This Sunday we have guests again – Ale and Cakes are local duo ‘Jacey & Dan’, husband & wife Dan & Jacey Norton. Their music comes from the Old Time & Bluegrass tradition and blends beautifully. Two fine voices with intricate mandolin & guitar breaks. Altogether a wonderful package of good songs performed with great harmony.
Then on to Christmas celebrations with whole host of fantastic guests coming to Dreamers Folk in the New Year including, Jim Causley, Mike Silver, Tom Lewis, Mick Ryan, Na-Mara, Nerida Cuddy & Bruce Watson and John Conolly. 2023, it’s gonna be a great year!
Apologies to anyone trying to use the website for folk club information. Because of the problems caused by our present web hosting company, Jonathan is moving the website to a new hosting company and, if by the end of this week there has been no improvement, he will start a new website from scratch! What a pain and what was that about technology making life easier?! In the meantime, there’s the Facebook site and I’ll go on bringing a few paper copies of this each Sunday until the web-site is up and running again.
We also had an amazing evening last Saturday at the Cornish Zoom Folk Club with John and Marion in the chair. 19 different performers and no less that 7 different countries represented. We asked about December and there was clearly enough interest for us to run a session on Saturday 17th December so we’ll be doing that. Link to follow nearer the time.
As you probably know, Wadebridge Folk Club closed for the covid years and then. like Dreamers, found itself homeless and unable to meet in person. It’s good to hear that it is now being re-launched (by Neal and Gill Jolly) from Thursday 19th January (7 p.m) at the Barn at Pentireglaze Cafe, which is down a right turn (Brown signposted) off the New Polzeath Road @ PL27 6QY. Hot drinks available and (hopefully, still to be confirmed) those of an alcoholic nature, as the venue does have a license! The barn also has a log burner, chairs, tables etc and a sofa (First come first settled!). There will be a charge of £5 to cover the hire of the building and to build a fund to pay for the occasional guest performer in future. No amplification and a sort of stagey area, rather than a sing around. Spoken word performance will be very much welcome as well as singing and playing. More info promised in the New Year. Thanks to Graham for passing this on.
Next Thursday, 8th December, Martin Carthy is featured at Rosslyn Court. Tickets for the live show are sold out but you can still watch the livestream of the first hour online. Tickets and more info at WeGotTickets | Simple, honest ticketing | Martin Carthy live at Rosslyn Court
On Saturday 10th December from 7.30 to 9.00, Devoran Acoustic Sessions feature Jackie Oatley and Mike Cosgrave. This is in the Devoran Village Hall. One of the country’s best loved folk performers, traditional English folk songs, self-penned material and the odd cover. Jackie’s crystal clear singing and sensitive fiddle playing will be accompanied by Mike Cosgrave;s accordion and guitar. Tickets from Performances – Jackie Oates & Mike Cosgrave – Cornish Riviera Box Office (patronbase.com)
That’s more than enough for now.
All the best
Nigel
