Hi, a slightly short Newsletter this week, lots of other pressures at the moment.
We had some welcome visitors at Dreamers last Sunday including a couple of musicians from Germany with some great tunes and a range of instruments, some of them unfamiliar. They certainly got a traditional warm welcome at the Club and seemed to enjoy their evening. It’s their first time in Cornwall, travelling around and walking the SW Coast Path so they couldn’t have asked for better weather. Hopefully they will be able to stay around long enough to visit us again this coming Sunday but that’s not definite. It’ll be another Singers Night before Tim and Sue Brine on 11th September.
We were a little doubtful as to how many would come to the Cornish Zoom Folk Club last Saturday with all the holidays, Wadebridge Festival etc but in the event we had a great turn-out with performers from all over the UK, from Ireland and, late in the day, from New South Wales where Nerida Cuddy woke up specially early (on what was Sunday morning for her) and joined us. We’ve been doing these on-line zoom sessions now, in one form or another, for over two years and they are clearly popular with an opportunity to see and hear a range of performers from far and wide. The next Cornish Zoom Folk Club is on Saturday 24th September – if you’re not already on the mailing list and would like to be, please email me.
The St Ives September Festival runs for two weeks from Saturday 10th September with a big programme of events of all sorts. Some of the folk concerts are already sold out though, inexplicably, tickets are still available to hear Alistair at the Arts Club on Friday 16th September. Full details of what’s on each day are at Whats on daily – St Ives September Festival 2022 where tickets for most events can be booked.
Live to your Living Room returns on 9th September, after its summer break, with another busy programme starting with Will Pound and Jenn Butterworth on Friday 9th September and with a whole series on on-line concerts through the rest of the month. All the detail can be found at Events | Live Music Online Gig | Live to your Living Room
And, finally, I’ve just received copies of the latest edition of the excellent FolkLife West magazine with lots of news about clubs and events in our region and, also, interesting articles about folk topics including one on Women in Traditional Folk Song by Rosie Upton – looking forward to reading this – “I suspect this article may be controversial” are her starting words. I’ll try to bring a couple of copies along to the Club this Sunday
That’s all for now
Take care and all the best
Nigel
