Dreamers Newsletter 23rd June 2022

Posted By dreamersfolk on Jun 24, 2022

I hope everyone enjoyed the Shanty Festival in spite of the rather erratic weather from a heatwave on Friday to rain and high winds (to the point where some outdoor events had to be paused) on the Saturday and then just damp and rather chilly on the Sunday. But great to see so many people in the streets and venues and to hear some great singing again. Well done to all and, especially, to the organisers.

The Golowan Festival in Penzance comes to an end this weekend. On Saturday, there’s Mazey Day, one of the highlights of the Festival when the streets of Penzance are decorated with greenery and locals and school children dressed in colourful costumes process around the town carrying spectacular sculptures based on local themes including giant fish, ships and pirates. And on Sunday, there’s Quay Fair Day. The Golowan Band will not be performing on the Folk Stage at Quay Fair this year, but will be on the promenade at 4.15pm processing to the bandstand in Morrab Gardens bringing a musical end to the Golowan weekend. No doubt there will be some familiar faces and voices in evidence. Hopefully the rain and wind will hold off.

It’s time for the Cornish Zoom Folk Club again this Saturday 25th June starting at 7.30 when we hope to be joined by the usual array of great performers of all sorts from all over the UK and further afield. The link will go out as usual tomorrow, Friday. Hope to see you there and anyone who doesn’t get the link already and would like it, please just let me know.

A singers night again at Dreamers this Sunday and the following week before the next guest, Mike Silver, on 10th July.

And 2 more interesting offerings on the Live to Your Living Room site.

·        Tomorrow, Friday 24th June, at 8.00, there’s a fiddlers feast with RANT, bringing together four of Scotland’s finest – Bethany Reid from Shetland, Anna Massie and Lauren MacColl from the Black Isle and Gillian Frame from Arran – with a repertoire from old collections and their own contemporary writing. Tickets at RANT | Live to Your Living Room | Online Gig

·        Next Thursday, 30th June, at 8.00, the site has Bryony Griffith and Alice Jones from West Yorkshire. A fascination with local folk songs and tune collections, inspired by the landscape, language and character of their surroundings. Harmony, history and northern banter. And finally this week, some sad news. Some Dreamers will remember Tony Arnold who used to come to the Club a few years ago. Sadly Tony died this Wednesday. Thanks to Roger Strange for passing on the news.

That’s all for now, all the best
