Hi and welcome to a very brief Dreamers Newsletter, not a lot going on in the coming week.
The highlight, of course, is our guest for this coming Sunday Alistair Brown, who is, of course, well known to all of us at the Club as well as to many folk people all around the world. Alistair promises an evening (or at least half an evening) of celebration of Burns Night – 25th January is indeed the official Burns Night celebrating Robbie Burns Scotland’s National Bard, You don’t have to be Scottish to enjoy the connection to Scotland and it’s unique creative and innovative spirit. It should be a great evening, one not to be missed.
The previous evening, Saturday 24th January, is the first 2026 session of the Cornish Zoom Folk Club, based on the online sessions which developed to keep in touch and to keep the music flowing during the covid months. Also an opportunity to hear old and new friends from all over. As always, let me know if you don’t already get the link.
Nothing new this week from Live to Your Living Room but a new episode from Folk on Foot. This features the Ffern Folk Guild (Alex Merry of Boss Morris, artist Ben Edge, actor Charlie Cooper, singer and naturalist Sam Lee and broadcaster and author Zakia Sewell) who met in spectacular Devon countryside to decide which folk projects should receive a share of a £50,000 grant from the organic perfume company Ffern. As well as song, this led to a wide ranging discussion about why young people are increasingly fascinated by this country’s folk music and customs and why this connection matters. It includes vivid descriptions of The Abbots Bromley Horn Dance, The Padstow ‘Obby ‘Oss and the Flaming Tar Barrels of Ottery St. Mary). The Ffern Folk Guild in Devon with Alex Merry, Ben Edge, Charlie Cooper, Sam Lee and Zakia Sewell.
That’s all for this week. Don’t forget to let me know of any news or events you would like shared through this Newsletter
All the best
Nigel
