Dreamers guests on Sunday 6th January were that ageing Cornish “boyband” Rum & Shrub Shantymen. Fine voices all, their repertoire has grown over the years and we were given some old standards that have stood the test of time, such as “South Australia” but also included in the mix some newer songs that have the “swagger” of a shanty and response lines on which the Dreamers voices could ” haul on the halyard”!!
The banter and badinage between songs was as caustic as usual, but when the songs get going, the quality and power of 7 voices together filled the room with chorus. Sadly, Bob Burt, one of the original line-up, was not able to make the gig, Dreamers is not quite the same without his contributions of great chorus songs, come back soon Bob!
All in all, another great evening of song at Dreamers, ably controlled by our wonderful MC, Nigel. Reciting a tale of woe that whatever public house he cared to enter, the same band of singers was always there, driving drinkers away! Not our shanty boys obviously, who can be guaranteed to empty a keg or two wherever they perform!
