Dreamers newsletter 9th June 2022

Posted By dreamersfolk on Jun 10, 2022

Hi and welcome to this week’s Newsletter returning after a week’s holiday. I hope everyone enjoyed the long Jubilee Bank Holiday.

More guests at Dreamers this coming Sunday, 12th June with Barron Brady – stories, legends and folklore of the South West. If you want a preview of their offerings, there are samples on their website at Home (barronbrady.com). After this Sunday some Singers Nights and then Mike Silver in July and Nick Dow in August are the next visitors. Hoping to join you soon once my health improves.

Amazing to think it’s already nearly two weeks now since the last Cornish Zoom Folk Club on 28th May. We were missing quite a few regulars with assorted Festivals and other festivities around the country (and with our Australian friends away) so the line-up was a little different from usual but we still had some 19 screens, several with more than one performer so another excellent night with some really interesting songs. Thanks to Alistair for leading us through the evening. Next date is Saturday 25th June.

Not long now until the Falmouth Shanty Festival from Friday June 17th  to Sunday 19th.

It’s no mean feat co-ordinating 71 groups and 28 venues so the Committee have been working hard to finalise the line-up for this year’s festival so that visitors can plan their time carefully to ensure they see as many performances as possible. Lots of great groups and friends to watch this year, more info appearing all the time at News – Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival (falmouthseashanty.co.uk)/

A little later in the year, we have the Cornwall Folk Festival in Wadebridge at the end of August, There’s now a rough outline of what is happening and when at CornwallFolkFestival.com. Tickets on sale there too.

Just one on-line gig to mention coming up and a new name to me in Ruth Notman from Nottingham on Thursday 16th June 8pm (Ruth Notman | Online Gig | Live to Your Living Room) She first came to prominence in 2006 when, aged just seventeen, she was a finalist in the BBC Young Folk Awards. Her debut album Threads in 2007 “caused quite a stir”, according to the BBC making the folk scene sit up and take notice of her incredible voice. More followed before a musical sabbatical to go to university. Ruth returned to the UK folk scene in style in 2019, collaborating with Sam Kelly and Damien O’Kane on the album ‘Changeable Heart’, reintroducing audiences to her knock-out voice and unique brand of acoustic folk.

As I wrote a couple of months ago, I’m looking for someone to take over as Cornwall correspondent for Folklife. I’m still looking! If there was a volunteer from Dreamers, that would be best, as then the club still gets free publicity & 3 magazines each issue. Feel free to contact me for more info on what’s involved.

That’s all for this week, enjoy the music and all the best

Nigel
