Dreamers newsletter 30th June 2022

Posted By dreamersfolk on Jun 30, 2022

Welcome to this week’s Dreamers Newsletter.

It was good to see so many friends as well as some new faces at Dreamers at the Victoria last Sunday. Another Singers Night this coming Sunday followed by a guest night with an old favourite performer, Mike Silver, on 10th July.

Dreamers on Sunday night followed straight on from the June Cornish Zoom Folk Club the previous night, another busy session for our MCs, Malcolm and Hilary, doing a great job with performers and visitors from all round the UK as well as overseas as usual. Plenty of humour and a wide range of songs made for another excellent evening. Next date is Saturday 23rd July.

A few of us also managed to see Hilary (with Annie) on the Folk Stage in Penzance the same afternoon on Quay Fair Day, lovely songs well performed despite battling against the elements which at times threatened to take the gazebo as well as the words away! They won through!

We’re right in Festival time of course now with just a month to go until the Sidmouth International Festival. A packed programme of events and concerts including some very well known names such as Jackie Oates, John Spiers and Alistair Anderson in concert and a tribute night for Norma Waterson with many legendary names. Also some less familiar names, notably at the lunchtime concerts. Fill details and tickets from The Sidmouth Folk Festival – 29th July – 5th August 2022

After that, it’s less than a month until the Cornwall Festival in Wadebridge over the August Bank Holiday weekend (Cornwall Folk Festival – Brings Folk’s Best To Cornwall; Showcases Cornwall to the World! A reminder of the main events:-
Fri 26th: O’Hooley and Tidow + Du Glas (Town Hall); Angeline Morrison + Steve Winchester (John Betjeman Centre)
Sat 27th: FAR Stage from 11am-7pm; Dougie Maclean + Fly Yeti Fly (Town Hall); ‘Shanty Street’ noon-late PM; Folk Orchestra Workshop (Town Hall 10.30am)

Mon 29th: FAR Stage from 11am-7pm; Granny’s Attic + Handpicked (Town Hall); ‘Shanty Street’ noon-late PM; Songwriting Seminar (Goods Shed 10.30am)

On-line events are clearly here to stay with numerous ongoing zoom sessions and other events. Folk Life (www.folklife.uk) has a 2 stage Newsletter this week with the first including details and how to join such events as the Shenandoah Big Sing, next on 30 June and Virtual PMFF. An extract from the first can be found at https://youtu.be/3PReBT66OhQ) Big Sings are at 7.45 for 8pm UK time. Folk Life also has details of the virtual element of the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival on Sunday 25 September (that’s Portsmouth, Connecticut) as well as, nearer to home, the Ledbury Poetry Festival, from 30 June – mostly live but some paid-for Zoom events. https://www.poetry-festival.co.uk

2 gigs to mention on Live to your Living Room.
• Firstly, next Tuesday 5th July at 8.00 p.m. there are past Dreamers guests, the Shackleton Trio (Georgia Shackleton (fiddle, vocals), Aaren Bennett (guitar) and Nic Zuppardi (mandolin)), touring their brand new album Mousehold. Self-penned material blends with their imaginative yet authentic re-workings of traditional folk standards, with a regional twist from the group’s native East Anglia. • And further ahead, 20th July (8.00 p.m), is definitely a date for the diary with the official international launch of Nancy Kerr’s latest album, The Poor Shall Wear the Crown: Songs By Leon Rosselson, a collection of contemporary folk and Chanson masterpieces from the unique lyrical voice of Leon Rosselson. This is a hybrid gig with both a live audience in her home city of Sheffield, and with an international online audience, simultaneously. Nancy Kerr | Online Gig | Live to Your Living Room
