Hello and welcome to the Dreamers Newsletter after a gap as we were away, mainly at the amazing Festival in Dublin, the 20th year this has been held, in memory of Frank Harte. Some fine concerts, sing-arounds and other events including a walking and singing tour of Trinity College. All of a very high standard. We were made very welcome, not least by folk who remembered friends from Cornwall including Niall and Kitty, Roger Bryant and Ben Lang. Jane sang at a session on the Saturday and was then asked to sing again in the closing session so she sang Cornish Lads which was greeted with great enthusiasm. I hope the last two weeks at Dreamers (which we had to miss) saw lots of people and good performances too.
Two singers nights coming up on 5th and 12th October followed by the visit of the Shackleton Trio on 19th October. More of them later and then they are followed by the visit of Bodmin Folk Club the following week. So plenty to look forward to in the run-up to Christmas.
Meanwhile, this weekend, we have the Falmouth Voice Tour. It all starts around 8.00 tomorrow, Friday 3rd, with a sing in the bar of the Membly Hall Hotel on the sea front in Falmouth (TR11 4NT) . On Saturday there’s a shanty session in the Waterfront Bar on Custom House Quay at midday. Dinner is at 6.30 followed by the main session that evening. There’s a final sing in the bar on Sunday at 12 ansd we hope that at least some of our visitors will come on to Dreamers in the evening. Just drop in for any or all of these but If you want to join the dinner you need to book with the hotel at 01326 312869.
Just before we went away we had the September session of the Cornish Zoom Folk Club with plenty of excellent performers from all over the UK, from North America and New Zealand. It was great to see our past guest Nick Dow again – looking and playing fine but sadly he told us he has had to give up touring, partly because of a nasty fall down his stairs. Next Zoom session is on Saturday 25th October.
A reminder that you can see “Grace Will Lead Me Home” featuring Angeline Morrison, Colin Braithwaite-Kilcoyne and John Bickley (with John Palmer narrating) at Devoran Village Hall on October 17th. The Falmouth Packet claims this is the only Cornwall performance which comes a sa surprise to those of us who saw it recently in Penzance – highly recommended. Next Wednesday, 8th October at 8.00, the online site Live to Your Living Room has one of the outstanding melodeon players in Andy Cutting, also a warm and engaging performer. Andy is accompanied by Nigel Eaton, multi-instrumentalist and composer best known for playing the hurdy-gurdy. They’ve both played with a number of well-known bands – tickets at Buy tickets – Andy Cutting & Nigel Eaton – Zoom
That’s all I’ve got time for this week, hope to see you over the weekend in Falmouth and/or at Dreamers on Sunday night.
All the best,
Nigel.
