Welcome to this week’s Dreamers Newsletter. Apologies for the lack of one last week – and also next week as we’ll be away. Hopefully back for the beginning of October
A very quiet night at the Club last Sunday with some regulars away and, quite likely, others put off by the awful weather forecast. On the plus side it was lovely to see Mary and Ken again and I gather they’ll be around to entertain us (and Mary’s other audiences in Cornwall) for a couple more weeks too. I hope everyone got home safely.
For some of us, Sunday was a bit of a reunion following Alistair’s guest night at Penzance Folk Club the previous Wednesday which was a lovely evening. They meet every fortnight so their next one is on September 24th. Soon after that, on October 26th, we’ll welcome Bodmin Folk Club to Four Lanes. Let’s hope for better weather than when we last visited them – a great evening musically but a very, very wet drive.
Meanwhile we have more guests at Dreamers this Sunday 20th September with Milton Hide – Jim Tipler and Jo Church from East Sussex who joined forces back in 2017. They come from East Sussex and weave well-crafted story-based songs with guitar and clarinet blending perfectly with pure vocal harmonies. Do try to get along if you can.
The Cornish Zoom Folk Club is this coming Saturday 20th September at 7.30 as always. Unavoidably, this is a change of day from the usual 4th Saturday but that’s a one-off and we’ll be back to the 4th Saturday next month, on October 25th. We’re still having great nights and plenty of performers from around the UK and further afield – let me know if you need details.
Lamorna has asked me to mention another Cornish music event which I haven’t covered before. This is the Crantock Music Festival this weekend from Friday 19th September to Sunday 21st September. This is free, based at the Old Albion Inn in Crantock with a line-up of local and visiting performers (including our friend Mark Dowling). For full details of who’s on and when see <Crantock Festival>
It’s all happening with the Falmouth Voice Tour over the weekend of 3rd/5th October, mostly at the Membly Hall Hotel in Falmouth. There’ll be plenty of excellent performers as always – details from Pip Franklin
Live to Your Living Room has 3 good looking events in the near future. Full details of all these can be found at Buy tickets – Live to your Living Room:-
· Tonight, 18th September at 8.00, there’s Kevin Dempsey, active on the scene since the 1960s and still regarded as one of the UK’s finest folk guitarists
· On Sunday, 21st September at 4.00 p.m., there’s a hybrid gig from the beautiful St Andrews Church in Sheffield featuring Teesside trio The Young’uns, hosted in partnership with our friends at Live At Sam’s. The Young’uns specialise in finding hope and humanity in grief and sadness. Stunning three-part harmonies, powerful lyrics about inspirational people, and life-affirming folk songs that make your heart soar.
· And on Friday 26th September at 8.00, the site features Lauren MacColl and Anna Massie who make up half of the iconic Scottish fiddle band RANT but frequently play as a duo, and are accomplished solo artists in their own right. An outstanding evening of warm and enchanting Celtic folk from two of. the most talented Scottish musicians around.
.That’s all for this week, hope the next 2 Club nights go well.
All the best
Nigel
