Welcome to this week’s Dreamers Newsletter
With all the other attractions around – Festivals and visitors to Cornwall for example, it was to be expected that attendance at the Club on Sunday would be lower than in recent weeks. However, the quality of performances was particularly high and it will be a challenge for those who were away to maintain that standard. We particularly welcomed the three members of the Lang family; without their range of contributions, the evening would have been thin indeed but they all brought really excellent performances. We also welcomed David, an occasional visitor from Kent and he, as well as those regulars who did make it along, helped make this a really good evening. Thanks to all.
Next Sunday, 31st August, sees another Singers Night before our next guests, Barron Brady, on 7th September. Barron Brady is a duo comprising Simon Barron and Rosalind Brady. Based in the West Country, they perform a mix of traditional British folk songs and original compositions, characterised by a strong interplay between the two voices and Simon Barron’s sometimes jazz-tinged guitar work.
The Cornish Zoom Folk Club on Saturday 23rd August saw a similar picture to Dreamers – not as many people as sometimes but certainly enough to make for a good evening and an evening of pretty consistently high quality too. Remarkably our session at 7.30 on a UK Saturday evening welcomed performers from California where is was mid-morning on the Saturday and from New Zealand where it was 6.30 a.m. on the Sunday, nearly 24 hours apart on the clock. The next zoom session will be on Saturday 20th September – as a one-off and, unavoidably, this is the 3rd Saturday of the month rather than the usual 4th Saturday.
With the main Festival season drawing towards a close, a reminder that the 29th Cornish Voice Tour will be from 3rd to 5th October this year. Most events are at the Membly Hall Hotel except for a shanty sing from noon on the Saturday at the Waterfront Bar on Custom House Quay. It’s always a great weekend – best to contact Pip Franklin at di.franklin236@gmail.com (or at the Club) for more information.
